The interdisciplinary field of materials science, involves the discovery and design of new materials, with an emphasis on solids. In both of activities examinations of the structure and properties are essential for control and further development. Material science examinations at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology is a modern course offering comprehensive students education in the field of traditional engineering knowledge and state-of-the-art scientific achievements in the field of materials. The proposed course is adjusted to the needs of the ever-changing labour market. They also have advanced knowledge from the area of physics, chemistry, materials science, materials design, and selection of engineering materials for applications in various products, and also technology of manufacturing, processing, and recycling of engineering materials, and how to combine their structure and properties.

Graduates of the Material science examinations, specialisation will find their jobs in the: investigation laboratories and research centers, as well as in small, medium and big companies in many industry branches, among others, in the automotive, aviation, machine tool, electronics, metallurgical, ceramic, plastics, nanostructural, bioengineering and household appliances industries. advisory-, design- and engineering units, design and manufacturing technology, commissioning of products and materials, in the accreditation and attestation units, nanostructural systems, engineering materials, and apparatus for their investigation and processing.
They are also prepared for work in other enterprises, administrative and educational units, requiring engineering and computer science knowledge.
